The Lemosho Route: Kilimanjaro's Most Scenic Ascent
A remote western start, quiet forest trails, and the great crossing of the Shira Plateau — with 7 to 8 days on the mountain, Lemosho gives your body the one thing the summit rewards most: time.
8-day itinerary recommended · Private climbs · WFR-certified guides · Emergency oxygen carried
Quick Answer
The Lemosho Route is a 7–8 day camping climb that approaches Kilimanjaro from the remote west at Londorossi Gate, crosses the Shira Plateau, and joins the Machame trail for the summit push. Its gradual altitude gain gives one of the best acclimatization profiles on the mountain, which is why we recommend it to first-time climbers.
Route Overview
Why Does Lemosho Work So Well?
Lemosho solves the two problems that end most Kilimanjaro climbs early: altitude gained too fast, and morale worn down by crowds. It begins on the mountain's western side, where the first days are quiet, and it stretches the ascent across more nights than the classic routes.
After Shira 2, the route joins Machame — so you keep the remote start and still finish on the mountain's best-established high camps and summit line.
- Remote western approach with fewer trekkers in the early days
- Longer profile — more nights to adapt, higher odds on summit night
- Crosses all five ecological zones, rainforest to arctic summit
- The classic landmarks: Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall
Route & Camps
What Does 8 Days on Lemosho Look Like?
These are the typical camps on the 8-day itinerary. The 7-day version combines one stage — we will tell you honestly which fits your experience level.
Day 1
Londorossi Gate → Mti Mkubwa
A forest walk rich with birdlife. You begin low on the western flank and ease into altitude.
Day 2
Mti Mkubwa → Shira 1
Rainforest gives way to open moorland and your first long views across the plateau.
Day 3
Shira 1 → Shira 2
A full day crossing the Shira Plateau under big skies — gentle gradients, serious altitude gain.
Day 4
Shira 2 → Lava Tower → Barranco
The key acclimatization day: climb to 15,190-foot Lava Tower, then sleep lower at Barranco.
Day 5
Barranco → Karanga
The Barranco Wall — steep-looking, hands-on, and safe. A shorter day that lets you recover.
Day 6
Karanga → Barafu
The final approach to base camp. Early dinner, early sleep, summit boots by the tent door.
Day 7
Summit → Mweka Camp
Uhuru Peak at sunrise via Stella Point, then a long, supported descent to Mweka Camp.
Day 8
Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate
A final descent through rainforest, a certificate at the gate, and a very earned shower.
Lemosho vs Machame
Which Route Should You Pick?
Lemosho starts farther west and higher, with quieter first days and one more night of acclimatization. Machame starts lower in the rainforest and runs a day shorter — a gentler introduction to altitude with a lusher opening.
If you want maximum acclimatization and scenic variety, Lemosho is the premium choice. If your schedule is tighter and you want the classic forest start, Machame is excellent. Both merge mid-mountain, and both summit via Stella Point.
